"Different Path" can be literally understood as different roads coming together. Composed by percussionist Zhang Xiaochi, this piece aims to explore the combination of Chinese percussion instruments and Western percussion instruments. It incorporates some commonly used instruments from both traditions, such as Tom-Toms and bongos from the Western tradition, and snare drums, flowerpot drums, and some brass percussion instruments from the Chinese tradition. The composer also employs a significant amount of rhythmic counterpoint in the composition, highlighting the captivating charm of intricate percussion rhythms and explosive sounds. It also challenges the synergy between the two performers, as the distinct styles of the instruments require careful balance of sound. This aspect relies on the performers themselves to navigate.
