Give a drummer a pattern and they can play one groove. Teach them the principles and they can play them all.

Drum-kit teaching has long relied on pages of patterns to be repeated until they become automatic. Many students practise for hours without knowing what they are practising or why. This academic monograph proposes a first-principles alternative: a "teach-to-fish" pedagogy that reduces drumming to four pillars (hand technique, foot technique, groove, and fill) and explains technique through the physics of height, weight, and rebound.

Drawing on the history of drum-kit pedagogy, research on groove and rhythm, and research on motor learning and practice, the book analyses a complete ten-week curriculum for pop and funk drumming, from the first quarter notes to linear fills, the shuffle, and the classic grooves of the great drummers.

Written for drum teachers, music educators, researchers, and serious students.
