Percussion students usually learn rhythm for years before they ever play a melody.

This academic monograph argues that the handpan, a portable, hand-played steel instrument developed around 2000, can bring melody, harmony, and improvisation into the very first stage of music learning. Drawing on Suzuki, Orff, Kodály, Dalcroze, and the percussion method-book tradition, it introduces Musician Mind Pedagogy, a framework that invites beginners to think as performer, composer, and conductor from the first lesson.

At its centre is a complete twelve-lesson curriculum with original repertoire, notated examples, recordings, and technique videos, together with findings from a pilot with adult learners. The final chapters carry the method into three fast-growing settings: school aesthetic education, non-clinical well-being practice, and human–AI collaborative teaching.

Written for music educators, researchers, percussion and handpan teachers, and teacher-training programmes.
